From Times Staff and Wire Reports

One of the smallest rabbits in the world was designated an endangered species, but a biologist said federal protection may have come too late to save it. The Columbia Basin pygmy rabbit is found in Washington state. Officials say there are probably fewer than 30 left -- and possibly only a dozen in the wild. The tiny bunnies weigh about two-thirds of a pound and are 4 to 6 inches long.
