Accident Kills 3 in Car; Another Kills 2 on Foot
Five Southland residents were killed in two separate traffic accidents early Sunday.
Three men were killed about 2:50 a.m. when the driver of a BMW traveling east in the 500 block of West 28th Street near downtown Los Angeles lost control trying to make a turn, struck the curb, overturned and slammed into a pole, according to police.
“Speed was definitely a factor,” said Adriana Sanchez, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department.
All three were declared dead at the scene. They were identified as Issa Michel, 21; Carlos Villagas, 20; and Edward Lopez, 23, all of Los Angeles.
About two hours earlier, two men were killed on the Pomona Freeway just east of Diamond Bar Boulevard in Diamond Bar. They had gotten out of a disabled Mazda that had been involved in an accident of unknown origin and were standing next to it when they were struck by an eastbound Honda and thrown into an opposing lane, said Officer John Seumanutafa, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol.
The two victims were identified as William Jeffrey Coe of Upland, and Anthony Donte Rogers of Oxnard, both 18.
