Sundin Reaches Milestone

Mats Sundin registered his 1,000th career point when he scored Monday night in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 3-2 victory over the Oilers at Edmonton, Canada.

Alexander Mogilny and Tomas Kaberle also scored 38 seconds apart early in the third period for the Maple Leafs.

Ryan Smyth and Mike Comrie scored for Edmonton.

Sundin’s milestone point came with 5:48 left in the third period as he skated from behind the net and backhanded the puck past goalie Tommy Salo. It was his 31st goal of the season.

Smyth opened the scoring at 5:54 of the second period when he easily netted a cross-crease pass from rookie Ales Hemsky behind Ed Belfour. Hemsky had just intercepted a clearing attempt, circled the net and passed to Smyth.

Mogilny tied it, 1-1, only 16 seconds into the third period with his 28th goal of the season. Kaberle put the Maple Leafs up, 2-1, at 54 seconds.

Mogilny put a pass from Nik Antropov behind Salo after Antropov stripped defenseman Eric Brewer of the puck in the corner. Kaberle made it 2-1 when Owen Nolan, playing his second game for Toronto, passed to the defenseman who beat Salo.

Toronto snapped a four-game winless streak. Although Edmonton lost, it maintained a five-point cushion for eighth place in the Western Conference.

Washington 2, Philadelphia 1 -- Peter Bondra scored a power-play goal 21 seconds into overtime off an assist from Robert Lang, who scored the other goal for the Capitals at Washington. It was the first time this season that Philadelphia lost when taking a lead into the third period (22-1-3).

Colorado 2, Phoenix 2 -- Peter Forsberg scored for the third time in two games to help the Avalanche tie at Denver and pull to within three points of the Northwest Division lead.

Montreal 3, Nashville 1 -- Donald Audette scored two goals and Jose Theodore stopped 36 shots and had an assist to help the Canadiens break a nine-game winless streak with a win at Nashville.

Florida 2, New York Rangers 1 -- Viktor Kozlov scored two goals and Roberto Luongo made 40 saves to help the Panthers win at New York and break the Rangers’ five-game unbeaten streak.

Carolina 6, Columbus 5 -- Craig Adams and Kevyn Adams scored in the opening 7:12 to help the Hurricanes win at Raleigh, N.C.
