From Times Staff Reports
The City Council approved an emergency measure Friday to spend $496,000 to keep nine winter homeless shelters open until April 15.
The shelters provide about 860 beds. They are part of the annual cold-weather program that offers about 2,000 beds at 19 locations countywide. All were scheduled to close March 15, as they do every year.
The program is federally funded.
Advocates for the homeless and City Councilwoman Jan Perry are seeking city and county money to keep the shelters open year round.
