Willis and ‘Tears’

Francesca Harold Dean (Letters, March 9) is so wide afield as to merit a response. If director Antoine Fuqua indeed has an “alert, lucid mind,” then surely he knew what bringing Bruce Willis to the “Tears of the Sun” party meant.
Who is the “deluded pretender” on this set? Willis, who wants to put a human face on the larger issues, or Fuqua, who has a photo album of genocide to glance at between takes of Hawaii passing for Africa?
On his own, Fuqua might have managed a well-intentioned but muddled meditation on genocide without a strong voice holding him back. Willis signed on for a war flick, which is what was delivered despite resistance from the director’s chair. This film could hardly stand another 10 minutes of graphic violence. This is a movie about a rescue, period. Let’s stay on point.
