GIRLS’ SWIMMING

The CIF Relays on Saturday at Long Beach Belmont Plaza should give an early indication of which teams have the most depth. Because most of the elite swimmers will not join their high school teams until after the U.S. spring nationals early next month, some alternates will get a chance to show they can contribute. Irvine’s Elliko Heimbach, an age-group national champion from Japan, is off to a good start, producing region-leading times in the 200 freestyle (1:54.60) and 100 butterfly (57.79).

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

There have been no changes in the top four spots since the preseason rankings were released, but the final six have undergone quite a shakeup. Arroyo Grande, led by a superb group of shotputters and discus throwers, makes its first appearance in the rankings. Indio, led by discus thrower Greg Garza and distance runner Joel Cota, and Pasadena La Salle, led by thrower John Caulfied, also make debuts.

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

The rankings have undergone few changes since the preseason rankings were published. Former No. 7 Irvine Woodbridge drops out of the top 10 because of a hamstring injury to defending state triple jump champion Michelle Sanford while Hesperia Sultana makes its debut. Arroyo Grande has a superb group of throwers led by Billie Jo Grant and Megan Howard, but the Eagles will be hard-pressed to crack into the top three this season as Long Beach Poly, Riverside North and Long Beach Wilson have so much depth in the sprints, hurdles, relays and jumps.
