Macedonian cancels U.S. tour

Macedonian gypsy singer Esma Redzepova has canceled a 24-date U.S. tour that was to have included an April 29 concert at UCLA’s Tom Bradley International Center.

Berkeley-based tour organizer Sani Rifati said that Redzepova and her five-member band, all Muslims, feared anti-Islamic sentiment in the United States. Concerns about travel difficulties during wartime and doubts about securing visas in time for the tour also factored into the decision, he said.
