Men in Blue Also Stood in Bull’s-Eye
Sportswriting in 1920 was not lacking for color. Then, as now, umpires remained popular targets. Here are some excerpts from the Boston Globe and the New York Times:
* “If umpire Bill Dinneen robbed [Wally] Pipp of a home run, he made the score all square in that respect when he jimmied [Mike] Menosky of his slam in the grandstand.”
* “The Red Sox got so gabby on the bench that Dinneen threatened to take all their money away from them if they didn’t shut up. They still have their money.”
* “During the excitement between the umpires and the players, someone hit Dinneen with a bag of peanuts. Wasteful extravagance.”
