A small aircraft developed engine trouble shortly after taking off from Corona Municipal Airport on Sunday afternoon and crashed in a field, killing the pilot, authorities said.

No one else was injured in the crash, which occurred about 3 p.m., said Larri Frelow, an operations officer for the Federal Aviation Administration.

The Cessna 411, which was destined for Santa Monica, crashed in a field near the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and River Road, about two miles east of the airport.

The pilot was the only person aboard. Authorities did not release the victim’s identity.

It was the third fatal plane crash in Riverside and San Bernardino counties this year, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.

In April, a Carlsbad woman and a San Diego man were killed when their Piper Cherokee crashed into a wooded area near Big Bear Lake shortly after takeoff. One passenger survived. In March, three people were killed when their Beechcraft D-18 crashed on approach to the Lake Riverside Estates Airport west of Anza.

The NTSB is investigating those two incidents.
