Young’s Two Homers, Two Triples Lift Tigers

On the most phenomenal night of his major league career, Dmitri Young did more than just go five for five with two home runs, two triples and five runs batted in.

He also passed up a chance to hit for the cycle, and fell tantalizingly close to matching a record that Ty Cobb has held for 78 years.

Led by Young, the Detroit Tigers clinched their first series victory since August by defeating the Baltimore Orioles, 7-6, Tuesday night at Baltimore.

Young finished with 15 total bases, one short of the team record set by Cobb in 1925. Young had been batting .190.

“It’s bizarre. I cannot even fathom what went down tonight,” Young said. “By the time it soaks in, I have to be back out here.”

The Tigers are riding a three-game winning streak for the first time since August.

Young also singled and would have hit for the cycle had he stopped at second base on his ninth-inning tiebreaking triple.

Boston 7, Kansas City 3 -- Doug Mirabelli had four hits and Todd Walker drove in three runs, and the Red Sox handed the Royals their first loss in 12 home games this season.

The Royals fell one victory short of matching the 1911 Tigers, who opened 12-0 at home to set the modern major league record for the longest home winning streak to start a season.

Oakland 6, Chicago 0 -- Mark Mulder (5-1) pitched a five-hitter at Oakland for the seventh shutout of his career in a game that lasted 1 hour 49 minutes -- the fastest Oakland game since Aug. 12, 1979, at Minnesota.

Minnesota 7, Tampa Bay 3 -- Jacque Jones went five for five, including two homers, at St. Petersburg, Fla., and the Twins beat the Devil Rays for the ninth consecutive time.

Toronto 15, Texas 5 -- Carlos Delgado hit two of Toronto’s five home runs at Arlington, Texas, giving him 11 and a tie for the American League lead with Texas’ Juan Gonzalez and Carl Everett, who hit a three-run blast.

Seattle 12, New York 7 -- John Olerud hit two doubles and Jamie Moyer (4-2) struck out five in five innings to lead the Mariners at Seattle.

Raul Mondesi had three hits, including two doubles, for the Yankees.
