A Hawaii-bound flight departing from San Francisco International Airport was delayed Sunday after a piece of luggage in the aircraft’s forward cargo compartment burst open, authorities said.

“There was a loud, booming noise,” said Henry Thompson, an airport spokesman.

The incident occurred about 9:50 a.m., shortly before the scheduled takeoff of United Airlines Flight 33.

After a preliminary investigation, authorities believe that the piece of luggage burst open because pressure had accumulated within the case. The luggage originated in Salt Lake City, which is higher in altitude than San Francisco, Thompson said.

Investigators found no trace of a bomb or other explosive materials.

The flight was delayed for more than four hours.
