Yankees Unable to Solve Mulder

Oakland starter Mark Mulder gave up only three hits in eight innings to post his fifth consecutive victory, pitching the Athletics past the New York Yankees, 5-2, Sunday at Oakland.

“I’m going to go after everybody,” said Mulder, who improved to 2-4 against the Yankees, the only team against which he has a losing record. “It’s like, ‘Here it is, put it in play.’ I’m going to throw strikes and try to get quick outs.”

Mulder (6-1) gave up two runs, walked two and struck out eight, his season high. He came within an inning of throwing his fourth consecutive complete game. Keith Foulke pitched the ninth for his 10th save in 12 opportunities.

Oakland won two of three from the Yankees for the second consecutive weekend. The A’s (23-14) are off to their best start since going 25-12 on the way to the AL West title in 1990.

Yankee starter Andy Pettitte (4-3) matched his career high by giving up three home runs. He gave up five runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Seattle 7, Chicago 2 -- Jamie Moyer pitched seven sharp innings at Seattle to beat the White Sox for the first time since Aug. 10, 1999, and the Mariners got home runs from Edgar Martinez, Mike Cameron and Greg Colbrunn.

Moyer (5-2), a 40-year-old left-hander, gave up two runs and two hits. He walked three. Left-hander Mark Buehrle (2-6), a 19-game winner last season, lost his start for the fifth consecutive time. Buehrle, who hasn’t won since April 10, gave up five runs -- four earned -- and nine hits.

Kansas City 8, Baltimore 5 -- Rookie Ken Harvey sparked a four-run seventh inning with a go-ahead, two-run single at Kansas City, Mo. He has eight game-tying or go-ahead hits in his last 18 games, including a two-run homer in the eighth inning Saturday.

With one out in the seventh and the score tied, 3-3, Desi Relaford walked and Carlos Beltran hit a ground-rule double. Travis Driskill (0-1) intentionally walked left-handed hitting Raul Ibanez to face Harvey. The move backfired when Harvey lined a single to left, driving in Relaford and Beltran.

Detroit 9, Tampa Bay 2 -- Shane Halter, Dmitri Young and Carlos Pena each drove in two runs to lead the Tigers at St. Petersburg, Fla.

Left-hander Steve Avery pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Tigers, making his first major league regular-season appearance since 1999.

Minnesota 9, Boston 8 -- The Red Sox rallied from a 9-1 deficit and cut it to 9-8 in the top of the ninth inning on Shea Hillenbrand’s two-out, two-run single. But closer Eddie Guardado retired Bill Mueller on a grounder with two on to end it.
