A preliminary investigation indicates that one of several Moreno Valley police officers responding to a suicide threat last week accidentally shot the Riverside County sheriff’s sergeant who was wounded, police said.

The investigation into the shooting continues, with investigators awaiting ballistics tests that will allow them to identify which gun fired the bullet that struck Sgt. James Briones, a 24-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department, in the right forearm.

The man who threatened suicide, Mario Castro, 30, of Moreno Valley, allegedly displayed a semiautomatic handgun when officers came to his home, but the investigation found that Castro did not fire it, police said. Castro was not injured.
