From Times Staff Reports
Police were searching Wednesday for the registered owner of a handgun found in an alley by a 12-year-old boy, who accidentally shot himself.
Police Sgt. Rick Martinez said the boy and a friend found the gun and ammunition in a bag behind a strip mall on Ball Road. For unknown reasons, he said, the gun fired, startling the boys.
“They got scared and started running with the gun down the street,” he said. But it went off again, hitting the boy in the stomach. He was hospitalized.
