Frustrated Drivers Weren’t Making Hay -- or Time -- While the Sun Shone

Share

All that horsepower slowed to a crawl Thursday morning on the Golden State Freeway -- and by what? KFWB’s Allen Lee said it was a truck spill of hay. Oh, neigh!

Hurrying along: That’s the theme of today’s column art (see photos).

I’m sure the medical group noticed by Tom Fox of Newport Beach renders fast, wide-awake assistance, despite its name.

Jim Bridge of Buena Park, meanwhile, found a downtown L.A. shop that can serve breakfast drinks very quickly -- or slowly, depending on your mood.

And finally, Bart Everett came upon a warning evidently intended for drivers who leave the roadway and try to take a shortcut through a ditch (see photo).

Splitting hairs: John Morgan Wilson of West Hollywood saw a sign that said, “Say no to drugs. Say yes to rugs.” Rugs of the floor-covering, or head-covering, type, he wasn’t sure.

Storied intersections: More interested in my brain than my body, filmmaker Larry Bridges wrote to ask if I could give him some “weird and poetic combinations of cross streets” for a work in progress. I nominated:

* Palm Drive and Reeder Avenue in Covina.

* Shakespeare Lane and Shelley Place in the Stevenson Ranch area near Valencia.

* Gregory Way and Peck Drive in Beverly Hills.

* Antonio Parkway and Avenida de Las Banderas in Rancho Santa Margarita.

The last two were not named after the actors. I have a hunch that Shakespeare and Shelley were named after those writer guys.

I wasn’t even invited: Former Laker Dennis Rodman, a citizen of Newport Beach, revealed that he just got married, but he didn’t say whether it was a formal affair. You know, one with a long-flowing white dress with lace -- for the groom. Rodman, you’ll recall, occasionally dresses in bridal gowns.

Rodman said he plans to live apart from the missus on weekdays. He had a somewhat similar arrangement with his last wife, actress Carmen Electra. Once, while being interviewed on national TV after a Laker game, he tried to send Electra best wishes but forgot her name. It came out this way: “I’d like to say hello to uh, uh.... “

Rodman did not talk about the presents received after his latest nuptials. After his marriage to Electra, he expressed bitterness that former teammates Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen sent him nothing.

“It’s amazing how all these athletes and famous people give guys parties, celebrations and all that stuff,” he said. “When it comes to me, I get none of that.”

Of course, Jordan and Pippen are both pretty astute businessmen. Rodman’s marriage to Electra ended a few weeks later.

miscelLAny: Although Rodman’s divorce from Electra was cordial, he did take some related legal action. He sued the maker of the “Dennis Rodman Wedding Dress Doll.”
