He Wants an Artistic Finish

A year ago, jockey Victor Espinoza was following his Kentucky Derby upset with another win on War Emblem in the Preakness.

Today, he will settle for riding in the $100,000 Senorita Stakes at Hollywood Park. Espinoza will be aboard contender Makeup Artist in the Grade III at a mile on the turf.

The 3-year-old Dynaformer filly will be making her first start in a graded race after finishing no worse than second in her first three races.

After debuting with a second in a main track sprint at Hollywood Park last Dec. 15, Makeup Artist stretched out on turf and broke her maiden at a mile, then was second, beaten by a neck, in the Providencia on April 13 at Santa Anita.

Major Idea, fifth as the 3-2 choice in the Providencia after winning her previous three starts on the turf, will try to rebound today for trainer Neil Drysdale.

Race of the day: You will try for her ninth lifetime win in the $200,000 Shuvee Handicap at a mile at Belmont Park. The field also includes graded stakes winners Smok’n Frolic, Raging Rever and Nonsuch Bay, along with Wild Spirit, a multiple Group I winner from Chile making her U.S. debut.

One for the road: Well Worth It, a full brother to multiple stakes winner Heavenly Prize, debuts in the fourth at Belmont Park. He has worked well for trainer Shug McGaughey.

Exotically speaking: A trifecta in the seventh keying Le Mans on top with Slew’s Prince, Harbour Crossing and Shadow Of Illinois on top and all in the three hole.

Winners (through Thursday): 3/42. Money: Previous day/meet total: $15.20/$230.80. Total money bet: $292.
