Police Blame Vandals for Rash of Smashed Windows

Vandals have broken the windows of at least 43 cars parked on streets in Pasadena and surrounding areas over the last few weeks, police said.

Areas ranging from San Marino to Altadena have been hit, and authorities believe the incidents are connected, said Pasadena Police Lt. Randell Taylor.

Except for a small ball bearing found inside one of the vandalized cars, police have no other evidence, Taylor said. Nothing has been reported missing from the vehicles, he said.

A witness saw four passengers in a white 1965 Chevy Corvair with gray primer spots leaving the area where a car window had been shattered in Pasadena.

The passengers are not suspects, but police are looking for them, hoping they might have some information, Taylor said.

Pasadena residents first reported broken car windows Wednesday. Police tallied 19 incidents by the end of the day.

Several similar incidents occurred Sunday night, bringing the total to 22, police said.

The incidents all seem to have taken place on five different streets, Taylor said.

Police suspect the ball bearing found in one of the cars was probably hurled with a slingshot.

South Pasadena has had 15 similar incidents since April 26, said South Pasadena Police Capt. Mike Ward, who said police have no evidence or witnesses.

Six car windows in San Marino were broken Sunday night, a San Marino Police Department dispatcher said.
