Athletics Beat Twins After Animosities End

Tim Hudson gave up five hits in eight innings at Oakland and the Athletics defeated the Minnesota Twins, 4-1, Tuesday night in a testy rematch of last October’s American League division series.

The teams rushed the field in the fifth inning after Rick Reed hit Ramon Hernandez with a pitch and in the sixth when Hudson hit Bobby Kielty.

No punches were thrown and nobody was ejected, but anger seems to remain from last season’s playoffs, when Twin catcher A.J. Pierzynski angered the Athletics during Minnesota’s clinching Game 5 victory at the Coliseum.

Seattle 7, Kansas City 4 -- Randy Winn hit a two-run homer, and Bret Boone and Mike Cameron doubled off the wall for the Mariners, who scored four times in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Boston 10, New York 7 -- The host Red Sox ruined Jose Contreras’ return to the majors with a five-run seventh inning.

Contreras, recalled earlier in the day after four minor league appearances, gave up all five runs in the seventh-inning rally.

Cleveland 6, Detroit 4 -- Rookie Brandon Phillips hit a three-run homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Indians.

Texas 5, Tampa Bay 2 -- Alex Rodriguez hit a two-run homer at Arlington, Texas, and the Rangers extended their winning streak to a season-high four games.

Chicago 4, Toronto 1 -- Bartolo Colon (5-3) cooled off the Blue Jay bats and the host White Sox ended a four-game skid.

Toronto started the game leading the majors in batting average, runs, hits, total bases and doubles.
