Cooper Returns to Winning Ways

Sheryl Swoopes scored 27 points and Cynthia Cooper had 11 points and seven assists in her first game since coming out of retirement as the Comets beat the Seattle Storm, 75-64, Thursday night in the season opener at Houston.

Sue Bird had 19 points for the Storm, which pulled to within six points with 8:20 remaining before Houston pulled away with an 11-0 run.

Cooper, 40, helped the Comets win four straight WNBA titles before retiring following the 2000 season.

She got a rousing ovation when introduced before the game. After committing a turnover in the first minute, she made her first shot to give the Comets a 6-0 lead.

Sacramento 65, Phoenix 56 -- Yolanda Griffith had 27 points and 11 rebounds for the visiting Monarchs at Phoenix.

The WNBA will use instant replay to review certain plays during the final seconds of each half and overtime this season. It is the same policy that was used by the NBA this season.
