WHEN UCLA HAS THE BALL
Tyler Ebell will start at tailback, but Maurice Drew, the freshman who rushed for 176 yards against Arizona State last week, will get plenty of playing time. Whoever "has the hot hand," as Coach Karl Dorrell likes to say, will get most of the carries. Quarterback Matt Moore was wild high with too many of his passes last week, but Dorrell expects the sophomore to be more accurate and efficient in his second start since returning from a season-opening knee injury, especially against a Cardinal defense that has allowed an average of 278.5 yards passing. Converted defensive lineman Kevin Brown probably will play most of the game today.
WHEN STANFORD HAS THE BALL
Chris Lewis, a former Long Beach Poly High star who missed much of the 2002 season because of a shoulder injury, could cause problems for the Bruins, who have had some difficulty containing scrambling quarterbacks. Matt Clark, UCLA's 5-foot-9, 174-pound cornerback who is used to covering bigger receivers, will have the experience of guarding a smaller man, but Luke Powell, Stanford's 5-8, 175-pound senior, is a handful. He's averaging 11.3 yards a catch, having caught 27 passes for 305 yards and two touchdowns.
KEYS TO THE UCLA VICTORY
Overwhelm Stanford's offensive line: The Cardinal line has been a weak spot, and the Bruins should be able to mount a good pass rush and pressure Lewis.
Protect Matt Moore: UCLA has done a decent job against the blitz this season, but that was with running Manuel White, the team's best blocking back. White is out for the season, so running backs Drew and Ebell need to pick up the right men when Stanford blitzes.
Run the ball: The Bruin offensive line needs to build on the momentum from last week's 213-yard rushing effort against Arizona State and open some more holes for Drew and Ebell. That will help open up the passing game for Moore.
