More ‘Monk’: ABC has picked up the second season of “Monk,” the comedy about a quirky detective starring Tony Shalhoub. The episodes, which have been shown on USA Network, will premiere Jan. 17, replacing the already-canceled “L.A. Dragnet.”

Weekend gig: Elizabeth Vargas, a correspondent for ABC’s prime-time newsmagazines and a frequent substitute anchor for “World News Tonight with Peter Jennings,” has been named the anchor of “World News Tonight Sunday.” She replaces Carole Simpson, who remains a contributor to the evening newscasts.
