Pepperdine Cruises to Win

Two games into his college career, Pepperdine’s Shaun Davis looks right at home.

The freshman point guard made all six of his shots, finishing with 20 points and leading six Waves in double figures as Pepperdine routed Colorado, 94-77, Monday night in a nonconference men’s basketball victory in front of 1,847 at Firestone Fieldhouse.

It was an about-face performance for the Waves, who fell to Dayton, 90-77, three nights earlier.

On Monday, Terrance Johnson scored 16 points off the bench, Jesse Pinegar had 14, Alex Acker added 12, and Glen McGowan and reserve Cody Horning each chipped in with 11 points.

“This was what we wanted to play like,” Johnson said. “We came out passive and sluggish against Dayton.”

Pepperdine took charge with a 16-8 spurt after trailing by one at halftime. Pinegar made two three-point shots as the Waves sank seven of their first 10 shots in the half. Most impressive was Davis, a freshman who had six assists and five steals.

“He had a good game in his first game, but tonight he showed the kind of player he can be,” Pepperdine Coach Paul Westphal said of Davis. “He took them completely out of their offense in the second half.”

David Harrison, a 7-foot junior center, led Colorado (1-1) with a game-high 30 points. Colorado Coach Ricardo Patton picked up his second technical foul with 2:25 remaining and was ejected.

Arizona State 83, Cal State Fullerton 76 -- Ike Diogu scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half in the victory at Tempe, Ariz. The Sun Devils (2-0) built a 16-point lead and then withstood a comeback by the Titans (0-2), who cut the deficit to four, at 80-76, with 11 seconds left, but got no closer.

Washington 91, UC Riverside 78 -- Brandon Roy’s 22 points lifted the Huskies (2-0) to victory at Seattle. Kevin Butler’s 20 points led the Highlanders (0-2), who went on a 10-0 run to take a 48-43 lead with 16:40 left in the game. Washington’s full-court pressure then spurred a 32-6 Husky run.
