10-Year-Old Dies After Playing Football Game
A 10-year-old boy mysteriously collapsed and died Wednesday after playing in an after-school flag football game in Alhambra, officials said.
Austin Mejia, a fifth-grader at Martha Baldwin Elementary School, did not have any known medical condition. A coroner’s investigation is pending.
He collapsed shortly before 3 p.m. at his school, at 900 Almansor St., said Nadine Sweetmon, executive secretary for the Alhambra Unified School District.
Mejia became unwell during a water break after running with his peers on the playground. A coach called paramedics.
He died at the San Gabriel Valley Medical Center, Sweetmon said.
