Rookie Nick Collison of the Seattle SuperSonics needs surgery on both shoulders and will have to sit out the season.

The 6-foot-9 Collison dislocated his left shoulder early this week, and later tests showed weakness in his right shoulder.

Collison was the 12th overall pick in this year’s draft after leading Kansas to the NCAA championship game. He averaged 18.5 points and 10 rebounds as a senior for the Jayhawks.

The New Jersey Nets have reached a tentative agreement to buy out the contract of center Dikembe Mutombo, a deal that is believed to be worth approximately $30 million.

Club President Rod Thorn and David Falk, Mutombo’s agent, brokered the deal Saturday. It probably will be finalized Monday, Thorn said.

The move saves the Nets about $7 million in salary owed to Mutombo through the end of next season, and it gives him a chance to find a new team to join.

Miami Heat forward Caron Butler underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and could be sidelined a month.

Butler bruised his left knee during the first day of workouts Wednesday.

Tests showed no cartilage damage but revealed loose particles.

Forward Mike Miller signed a six-year contract extension with the Memphis Grizzlies. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Memphis acquired Miller last season in a trade with the Orlando Magic, and he averaged 12.8 points and 3.4 rebounds in 16 games with the Grizzlies. His season averages were 15.6 points and 5.2 rebounds in 65 games.
