Hollywood has a swelegant place

When it comes to Tinseltown night life, it don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that bling.

So when the sharp new restaurant and lounge the Falls was ready for its close-up in May, it opened the doors with a star-studded affair. A-list video director Dave Meyers was host to an A-list party, with such hip-hop superstars as Missy Elliott, Nelly and Queen Latifah christening the Sunset Boulevard spot. Before summer was out, the Falls was host to parties for Chris Judd, Ryan Seacrest and rapper-turned-actress Eve.

And quite simply, that’s all it took -- a few good bashes to help turn the Falls into an “it” spot for Hollywood revelers.

“Our aim is to give customers a great Hollywood experience without the stuffiness of fine dining,” says Omar Moss, who owns the Falls with his brother, Mark.

A big part of the intimate venue’s allure is by design.

“You can throw a great party for a new venue, but if it’s an awful place, no one will come back,” says MacAfrica, a veteran club promoter who is the host of Tuesday nights at the Falls. “But when people walk into the Falls, the response is immediate. They fall in love with it.”

Credit the Mosses for managing to make a swan out of the ugly duckling that was the Union club. The brothers, who used to own a security guard company and currently own the Dublin’s Irish Whiskey Club franchise, gutted the Union down to its two-by-fours to create the Falls.

To wit: Out went the billiard tables that used to take up Union’s downstairs and in came the snazzy chandeliers. Along with the new shimmery lighting came posh chenille booths shaped like clamshells and a 500-gallon saltwater tank with colorful exotic fish.

Although the 190-capacity nightclub is small, it makes great use of its space. There are four bars, and loads of nooks and crannies to duck into for undercover nuzzling. The club’s crown jewel is its outdoor waterfall, which cascades down over a cozy patio and ushers the way for those looking to find love under the stars.

Guests also take cover in the club’s Crystal Lounge, a cigar lounge complete with a humidor. Actors such as Cuba Gooding Jr. and Jean-Claude Van Damme favor this VIP area.

“It’s very cozy and classy,” says actress Maria Conchita Alonso, who visited the Falls on a recent Tuesday. “It’s an interesting mixture of people and it’s like a little private place.”

Its private-party feel is what keeps the joint jumping. Promoter BoJesse Christopher, who is the host of Saturdays at Ivar, Falcon on Thursdays and who also put Nacional on the map with its Tuesday night celebrity shuffle, took over the reins on Fridays at the Falls and is responsible for the Dave Meyers party, as well as Judd’s birthday bash.

“The Moss brothers actually put some thought, time, care and energy into making the space elegant,” says Christopher.

“They’re bringing back the old Hollywood sophistication and class, which has really been lacking for a while.”

Christopher has invited top L.A. DJs David Orlando and Adam 12 to get the place bouncing with rock and hip-hop on Fridays.

“To come out on a weekend night, you’ve really got to put your game face on,” says Christopher. “But the Falls gives you a good base camp. You can park, eat, dance, drink and check out some of the neighboring spots like Shelter, North and the Standard’s bar, which are all within walking distance.”

For the Moss brothers, the Falls is only the beginning. Two weeks ago, they opened a Dublin’s Irish Whiskey Club in Mammoth, Calif., and are currently building another in Las Vegas.

And in November, they’re opening Wacky Waffles, a breakfast club at the former location of the Coffee House, which is just a few doors down from the Falls.

Hmmm. From Irish pubs to slickster eateries, the Moss brothers appear to be the new kids on a very swelegant block.
