From Times Wire Reports

A retired firefighter rescued a trucker trapped beneath her overturned cement truck.

Duanne Shoemake, who retired from the Contra Costa County Fire Department four years ago, was taking his parents to Sacramento International Airport on Monday when he saw a cloud of smoke or dust on Interstate 5.

He stopped and found Tracie Lewis pinned under a Sacramento Concrete truck that tipped over after swerving. The loaded truck weighed about 35 tons, said Max Hartley of the California Highway Patrol.

Shoemake stopped another driver and borrowed a special jack to lift the truck’s cab off Lewis, who was unable to breathe. Lewis was flown by helicopter to UC Davis Medical Center, where she was in critical condition Tuesday morning.
