Keeneland Pool Grows

Share

Pick six players who like healthy carry-overs will focus their attention on Keeneland today.

The pick six has carried over five consecutive days, thanks to numerous longshot winners, and the pool at the Lexington track has grown to $90,030.

On a rare day without a graded stakes race, the pick six includes two races for 2-year-olds, two turf races and two allowance sprints.

One of the 2-year-old races is for maidens at 6 1/2 furlongs and features some well-bred rookies from successful stables.

Western Royalty, a son of Elusive Quality who was purchased for $420,000 this year, will debut for owner Michael McCarty and trainer Steve Asmussen off a solid work tab at Churchill Downs.

The field also includes Runaround, a son of Silver Charm, trained by Bob Baffert for owners Bob and Beverly Lewis, and other new shooters by Tale of the Cat, Exploit, Scatmandu, Sefapiano, Cherokee Run and Grand Slam.

In the first of the turf races, a $60,000 allowance for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles, Maliziosa will try for her second win in two starts on the Keeneland turf for trainer Bill Mott.

Race of the day: Garden In The Rain, who finished third in the Palomar Breeders’ Cup Handicap on Sept. 7 at Del Mar, will try for her fifth victory in 11 tries on the Santa Anita turf in today’s second, a $65,000 optional claimer at one mile. Julie Krone rides for trainer Jeff Mullins against Fun House, Red Rioja, Voz De Colegiala and Elaine’s Angel.

One for the road: Wish For Gold can make amends for her failure as the favorite on Sept. 21 at Arlington Park when she makes her turf debut in today’s third at Hawthorne in Chicago. The Hold For Gold filly should take to the new surface -- she’s a granddaughter of top turf sire Red Ransom -- in the 7 1/2-furlong race. Zoe Cadman rides.
