Mississippi State’s Sherrill to Call It Quits

Mississippi State Coach Jackie Sherrill, 59, will retire at the end of the season, ending speculation about the future of the school’s winningest coach.

The Bulldogs are 2-4 entering today’s game at Auburn and are coming off two consecutive three-win seasons.

Eric Shelton rushed for 128 yards and scored three touchdowns Friday night as Louisville (6-1, 2-1 Conference USA) cruised to a 47-28 victory over Tulane (3-4, 1-3) at Louisville, Ky.

Tennessee Coach Phillip Fulmer denied a claim by attorney John Gallion that Fulmer arranged a $50,000 line of credit for former Volunteer defensive tackle John Henderson before his senior season. Gallion also alleges that former running back Travis Henry received benefits worth $30,000.... Rice, Southern Methodist and Tulsa will leave the Western Athletic Conference to join Conference USA.... The Atlantic Coast Conference announced it will split into two six-team divisions for football with the addition of Boston College. Division A: Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Maryland, North Carolina State and Wake Forest. Division B: Duke, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech.... Steve Bowden, the oldest son of Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden, was sentenced to six months in home detention and ordered to pay $1.26 million in restitution for his role in a $10-million investment fraud.
