Ratings for Series Avoid Drop-Off
With the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs, the sentimental favorites, having been eliminated, a ratings drop-off for the World Series was expected.
From early indications Sunday, that may not be the case.
Game 1 Saturday night earned a preliminary national Nielsen rating of 10.9 with a 20 share, a 16% gain over the 9.4/18 for Game 1 of the World Series last year between the Angels and San Francisco Giants.
Final numbers won’t be available until today, but they are expected to be about the same as the “fast national” numbers released Sunday.
Saturday’s game earned a 26.7/40 in New York, and a 36.6/54 in Miami. The L.A. rating was a 13.2.
Chicago got a 12.0, up from 9.4 last year. In Boston, there was a drop-off from 8.9 to 8.6.
Breaking down the ratings by demographics, the biggest increases were among women. Among women 18-34, the rating was up 39%, from a 2.8 last year to a 3.9 Saturday.
A national rating point represents 1,084,000 households, or 1% of the nation’s estimated 108.4 million TV homes.
