An odd pairing for Halloween

Even when it isn’t Halloween, there are masked wrestlers in superhero costumes, men dressed as chickens and women stripping down to their skivvies at Lucha VaVoom.

The cross-cultural retro event, which combines Lucha Libre Mexican wrestling with the bodacious, flirtatious world of burlesque, made its debut last year. But Wednesday at the Mayan Theater, the Lucha Libre crew will throw its first All Halloween Spectacular with “bloodcurdling burlesque” by the Vampire Girl Gang, a monster match and other spookily fun surprises that won’t be revealed till the clock strikes 8.

Featuring old-school wrestlers from the ‘60s who are being flown in from Mexico for the event, the action starts outside the club, when the masked men show up in a parade of vintage cars and then make their way through the crowd and sign autographs.

Inside, things should heat up with a classic striptease only to be cooled down with a match between the Crazy Chickens: men who dress like poultry and peck at one another.

The rest of the night trades between strip acts and successively stranger wrestling matches, which feature monsters and the Mexican superstars La Parka and Mil Mascaras.

Already “some of the audience shows up in full costumes wearing masks of their favorite wrestlers,” said VaVoom producer and dancer Rita D’Albert. “This is an opportunity for them to go nuts and scream.”
