HOW TIMES HANDICAPPER BOB MIESZERSKI SEES THE JUVENILE FILLIES UNFOLDING

START

A cavalry charge for the lead seems guaranteed, meaning there could be an eventful first turn for several in this large lineup. Sprinters such as DIXIE HIGH and the inexperienced FOREST MUSIC could be the quickest but others, such as ASHADO, BE GENTLE, VICTORY U.S.A. and CLASS ABOVE, should be prominent. HALFBRIDLED, the filly everyone will be watching, got the lousiest post, 14, and it will be interesting to see what kind of trip Julie Krone is able to work out from no-man’s land.

AT THE HALF-MILE POLE

What should be a heated pace figures to take its toll on the sprinters and some of the other outclassed members of this cast, including VINO TINTO and RENAISSANCE LADY. CLASS ABOVE, who might be Bob Baffert’s best hope of winning his fourth Breeders’ Cup race, should be right with the lead, with VICTORY U.S.A., the maiden HOLLYWOOD STORY, TARLOW and even ZOSIMA close. HALFBRIDLED has been a complete professional in her three outings, so she should be able to cope with some adversity. Krone is likely to ride her with confidence.

AT THE QUARTER POLE

The pretenders should be gone and HALFBRIDLED should be ready to assert herself, along with the stretch-running SOCIETY SELECTION, who won two races in New York, including the Frizette, to begin her career. CLASS ABOVE should get tested for class after beating a weak field at Turfway Park last month. TARLOW is likely to improve with a route under her belt and HOLLYWOOD STORY, a talented maiden, is likely to collect another healthy share of the purse.

FINISH

Ten years after Phone Chatter won the Juvenile Fillies for trainer Richard Mandella, the Hall of Famer does it again with HALFBRIDLED, who will be the unanimous choice as the 2-year-old filly champion if she does the expected. If compromised too much by the post, HALFBRIDLED could fall to CLASS ABOVE. She hasn’t been given much credit for her two victories, but a lot of the same people downgraded VINDICATION before he won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile 12 months ago.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM EACH BREEDERS’ CUP

* 1986 at Santa Anita: Wayne Lukas added two more victories with Capote in the Juvenile and Lady’s Secret in the Distaff. The victory over Fran’s Valentine and six others was Lady’s Secret’s eighth Grade I win of the year and helped the gray daughter of Secretariat win horse of the year. Skywalker clinched that honor for Lady’s Secret later in the afternoon when he upset Turkoman and Precisionist in the Classic.

* 1987 at Hollywood Park: After upsets by Very Subtle in the Sprint and Epitome in the Juvenile Fillies, the rest of the day went according to form, capped by an epic meeting between the last two Kentucky Derby winners, Ferdinand and Alysheba. The older Ferdinand, with the late Bill Shoemaker waiting until the last possible moment to ask him for his best, prevailed by a nose over Alysheba, who flew late on the outside under Chris McCarron.
