Adam Scott of Australia closed with a five-under-par 66 Monday to win the Deutsche Bank Championship at Norton, Mass., his first PGA Tour title.

“It’s difficult to win in America, not just being a foreigner but a young player,” Scott, 23, said after a four-shot victory over Rocco Mediate, who finished with a 65.

With consecutive birdies that opened a huge lead and clutch pars that kept anyone from making a serious run, Scott led by at least three shots throughout a rainy day at the TPC of Boston and finished at 20-under 264. “He’s as good as you can get,” Mediate said of Scott, who swings like Tiger Woods and idolizes Greg Norman. “At his age ... we’ve got our hands full.”

Woods wasn’t a factor in the tournament that benefits his foundation. He tied for seventh at 11-under 273.

A mixed-team televised match featuring Woods and Annika Sorenstam has hit financial snags and will not be played, a source told Associated Press on condition of anonymity. The match was intended to revive Toronto’s tourism industry, which has been ravaged by fears of the SARS virus. Woods and Sorenstam were to play the Sept. 23 match against Canada’s Mike Weir and Lorie Kane at Magna Golf Club north of Toronto.

The source said organizers could not raise the $1.5 million required to stage the exhibition. Outside of Asia, Toronto had the largest outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome, a potentially deadly ailment.
