Irons, Slater Set for a Surf Battle
At 8 this morning, the horn will sound at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, signaling the start of the Boost Mobile Pro, the only Assn. of Surfing Professionals’ World Championship Tour event held on the U.S. mainland.
The world’s top 44 surfers and four wild-card entries will vie for $250,000 in prize money, with $30,000 going to the winner.
The brightest spotlight will be on Andy Irons, 25, the reigning world champion from Princeville, Hawaii, and Kelly Slater, 31, the six-time world champion from Cocoa Beach, Fla.
They are ranked Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, heading into the seventh of 12 WCT events.
Australia’s Luke Egan is the defending Boost Mobile Pro champion.
A moderate swell is forecast for the event, which runs from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. today, Friday, Saturday and Monday. Lower Trestles is at the northern end of San Onofre State Park.
