Fishing by the numbers
Diamond Valley Lake, Southern California’s largest freshwater reservoir, opens Oct. 3, and already more than 800 boats have undergone the mandatory inspection required to launch on the Riverside County reservoir.
More than 2,000 reservations were made to boat and fish on the lake within hours of being made available Wednesday, according to the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, which oversees Diamond Valley Lake.
Such big numbers -- the first weekend is sold out -- are no doubt being spurred by an even more impressive number, the estimated 42,000 largemouth bass prowling the lake in the company of trout, catfish and sunfish.
Because of parking constraints, only 350 passes a day will be issued at $5 a reservation.
The lake also charges a $7-per-vehicle entrance fee, a $6 boat launch fee and a $3-per-person fishing fee, whether fishing from boat or shore.
Initially, the only parking will be at the lake’s East Marina lot.
