WHEN UCLA HAS THE BALL

The deep passes that were there for the taking against Colorado and Illinois won’t be there against Oklahoma. Quarterback Drew Olson, in an effort to neutralize the Sooners’ pass rush, will probably use more quick drops and short passes. Manuel White, the more physical of the Bruins’ two primary running backs, will probably carry more than Tyler Ebell for the second consecutive game. If Oklahoma’s front four manhandles a young, inexperienced UCLA offensive line, it could be a long and difficult day for the Bruins.

WHEN OKLAHOMA HAS THE BALL

A Sooner line that averages 307 pounds per man has allowed only three sacks in three games. Quarterback Jason White, not much of a scrambler after major surgery on both knees, has had ample time to find receivers and run up his statistics. His favorite targets are Brandon Jones, a 6-2 junior who has 24 receptions for 282 yards with three touchdowns, and Mark Clayton, a 5-11 junior who has 10 receptions for 178 yards with two touchdowns.

KEYS TO UCLA VICTORY

1. Grind it out: White and Ebell need to find some running room to ease the pressure on Olson, eat up the clock with long drives and keep the Bruin defense off the field as long as possible.

2. Maintain good field position: Punter Chris Kluwe needs to be more consistent and can help the Bruins by booming punts from deep in UCLA territory and, when kicking from midfield, pinning Oklahoma near its goal line.

3. Make big plays: Whether it’s a defensive touchdown, a long pass from Olson to a receiver or a trick play, UCLA will need something dramatic, something unexpected, to upset Oklahoma.
