Powell Sees New U.N. Resolution on Role in Iraq
Secretary of State Colin L. Powell added momentum Thursday to the drive for a new U.N. Security Council statement on Iraq, telling Germany’s ZDF television, “I think there will be a new resolution.”
Spain and France are among the nations that have urged adoption of a new resolution to spell out the international role in the country.
The U.S.-led Coalition Provisional Authority is scheduled to hand over power to an interim Iraqi government June 30, although foreign troops will remain in the country.
Spain has said that it will withdraw its troops unless the United Nations assumes a central role. Although U.S. officials don’t want to surrender too much control to the world body, they are eager to have more of the burden shared.
Washington also wants an affirmation of Security Council support for recognition of the interim Iraqi government.
U.S. officials have been hinting privately that they expect a resolution.
