Meola Sets Shutout Record

Kansas City goalkeeper Tony Meola recorded his Major League Soccer-record 45th shutout in the Wizards’ season-opening 0-0 tie with the Chicago Fire on Saturday night in front of 20,229 at Kansas City, Mo.

The Wizards’ best opportunities came late in both halves.

In the 45th minute, Kerry Zavagnin’s shot from the top of the penalty area was tipped over the crossbar by goalkeeper Henry Ring.

In the 73rd, Diego Gutierrez’s shot hit the crossbar.

Chicago’s best opportunity came in the 79th minute when Damani Ralph drilled an open 20-yard shot over the crossbar.

Kansas City’s Chris Klein and Chicago’s C.J. Brown were ejected after a brief skirmish. Both will be suspended for their clubs’ next matches.

No overtime session was played. For the first time in MLS history, all regular-season ties will end as such.

New York/New Jersey 3, Columbus 1 -- John Wolyniec scored the go-ahead goal in the 52nd minute to help the MetroStars beat the Crew in front of 20,356 at Columbus, Ohio.

Amado Guevara scored in the 88th minute when he put a loose ball under Jon Busch. The MetroStars scored on their two shots on goal in the second half.

Columbus played its first game without franchise scoring leader Brian McBride, the U.S. national team forward who left in the off-season to play in the English Premier League.

Dallas 1, Colorado 1 -- Bobby Rhine’s penalty kick in the 76th minute gave the Burn the tie in front of 7,359 at Dallas.

Dallas was awarded the penalty kick when Daryl Powell was called for a handball. Rhine beat Joe Cannon into the right corner of the net.

The Rapids took a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute when John Spencer fired a shot from 10 yards that grazed the fingertips of Scott Garlick and bounced into the left corner of the net.

A goal was taken from Dallas in the 37th minute. Brad Davis’ score was discounted because of an offside penalty on Eddie Johnson.

Davis’ shot was one of several opportunities the Burn squandered despite outshooting the Rapids, 20-5.
