Serena Falls to Petrova

Nadia Petrova upset Serena Williams, 6-2, 6-3, on Friday in a quarterfinal match of the Bausch & Lomb Championships at Amelia Island, Fla.

Williams, who had been 8-0 this year, was bothered by a sore left knee. She will have it examined further today.

Also advancing were Justine Henin-Hardenne, Amelie Mauresmo and Lindsay Davenport.

Defending champion Rita Grande defeated seventh-seeded Lubomira Kurhajcova, 6-3, 1-6, 6-0, to reach the semifinals of the Grand Prix SAR at Casablanca, Morocco.

Cincinnati acquired cornerback Deltha O’Neal from Denver in a trade that also involved a swap of first-round draft picks in the NFL draft April 24. Cincinnati’s No. 17 selection goes to Denver for the 24th pick. The Bengals also received the Broncos’ fourth-round pick.

Troubled former Dallas defensive tackle Dimitrius Underwood, 27, was taken to a psychiatric ward after refusing to get out of his stalled car on Interstate 35 in Dallas on Thursday night. Underwood has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Receiver Dennis Northcutt has filed a grievance against the Cleveland Browns, the team he has been trying to leave since his agent failed to meet a deadline to make him a free agent.

Jerome Stanley, Northcutt’s agent, claimed the Browns did not bargain with the player in good faith and that the team breached Northcutt’s contract. The Browns deny the claims.

The Orlando Predators (4-5) rolled to a 57-24 victory over the New Orleans VooDoo (7-2) in an Arena League game before 13,203 at Orlando, Fla.

Little League Baseball Inc. announced that Moscow, the only Russian team to compete in the Little League World Series, will not be allowed to compete in this year’s tournament because a review found irregularities in the Khovrino Little League.

Martin Truex shattered the Nashville Superspeedway record with a lap of 166.515 mph at Gladeville, Tenn., then earned a trip to the back of the 43-car Busch Series field because he crashed in practice. Bobby Hamilton Jr., who had a 165.670 mph qualifying, will move to the front for today’s Pepsi 300.
