Mickelson Is Making a Fashion Statement

Phil Mickelson was wearing the green jacket he won Sunday at the Masters when he taped the “Tonight Show With Jay Leno” on Tuesday at the NBC studios in Burbank.

“So can you wear that jacket anywhere?” Leno asked.

Mickelson: “I’ve probably taken it places I shouldn’t have.”

Leno: “Like where?”

Mickelson: “[Wife] Amy and I took it to bed with us Sunday night.”

Trivia time: What was Mickelson’s first tournament win as a professional?

No money: For the second year in a row, CBS’ coverage of the Masters was commercial free.

In a segment called “More With Les,” in which David Letterman talks via telephone with CBS Chairman Les Moonves, Letterman on Monday night asked about the lack of income.

“We’ve been with the Masters for 49 consecutive years,” Moonves said. “Like we’ve had with you, it’s a wonderful relationship we hope goes on for many years.”

Letterman: “So if I said to you I’d really rather do the show without commercials, you’d be all right with that?”

Moonves: “I would probably yank you off the air.”

Pretty boy: Gary Payton, talking on Fox Sports Net’s “Best Damn Sports Show Period” about players who like to look good on the court, said, “I got a player on my team, he gets pretty. Karl Malone. He lotions up, he brushes his teeth, he puts on cologne.... Then he gets the shaving cream, shaves his head, waxes it up and then goes out and plays.”

High praise: In an interview David Stern did with ESPN’s Dan Patrick for today’s editions of “SportsCenter,” Stern was asked to name his starting five, or best five, during his time as NBA commissioner.

He named Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan immediately, and then, after thinking for a moment, added Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant.

More from Stern: The current turmoil among the Lakers hasn’t gone unnoticed by Stern. As a guest on Patrick’s radio show Monday, Stern was asked which teams the public would like to see in the NBA Finals.

“Lakers versus the Lakers,” he said, laughing. “Like an intersquad scrimmage game.... Think of the drama.”

Looking back: On this day in 1962, Elgin Baylor scored a playoff-record 61 points in a 126-121 Laker victory over the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals. However, the Celtics won the series, 4-3.

Note: Baylor’s record stood until Michael Jordan scored 63 points in a double-overtime playoff game against Boston in 1986.

Trivia answer: The Buick Invitational in 1993 in Mickelson’s hometown of San Diego.

And finally: “The latest big news is that Greece may not finish some of their buildings needed for the [Olympic] Games,” says NBC’s Conan O’Brien. “In a related story, this year the triathlon will consist of running, swimming and concrete pouring.”
