The NFL schedule this year features rematches of last season’s conference championship games and includes two games on Christmas Day.
The schedule, announced Wednesday, opens with a Thursday night game between the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts in Foxboro, Mass., on Sept. 9. The Patriots beat the Colts, 24-14, in last season’s AFC title game.
The Carolina Panthers play host to the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 17 in a rematch of the NFC championship.
Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs, back with the Washington Redskins, returns to the sideline on Sept. 12 against Tampa Bay.
There have been only eight Christmas Day games in NFL history, but there will be two this season as the Kansas City Chiefs meet the Oakland Raiders in the afternoon and the Tennessee Titans play host to the Denver Broncos at night.
