A survey commissioned by the Las Virgenes-Malibu Council of Governments has found that area residents consider traffic congestion a top issue for the region.

More than half of those surveyed favored widening the Ventura Freeway as a way to alleviate traffic jams. But nearly 75% opposed increasing the capacity of neighborhood streets.

A majority also opposed new housing and commercial developments.

The council, which represents Calabasas, Agoura Hills, Hidden Hills, Westlake Village, Malibu and unincorporated areas of west Los Angeles County, surveyed 500 registered voters for their views on topics ranging from transportation to planning priorities.

Officials will release the full results of the survey and answer questions at public meetings on Monday at the Agoura Hills-Calabasas Community Center, 27040 Malibu Hills Road in Calabasas; and Tuesday, at Malibu City Hall, 23815 Stuart Ranch Road.

Each workshop is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m.
