A consumer’s guide to the best and worst of sports media and merchandise. Ground rules: If it can be read, heard, observed, viewed, dialed or downloaded, it’s in play here. One exception: No products will be endorsed.

What: “Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Any Given Day” DVD.

Producer: NASCAR Images.

Price: $19.98.

Divided into chapters Monday through Sunday, along with “Talladega,” the most revealing part of the 91 minutes comes on Tuesday, when Earnhardt is doing photo shoots and commercials. Mostly bored, he offers insight about the spotlight.

“Sometimes,” he says, “the things you do off the race track outweigh what you do on the race track.”

There is little material that seems truly revealing, unless you are under the mistaken impression that Junior doesn’t use curse words. The DVD promises to take the viewer “behind doors that cameras have never before dared to open,” but once you get there, it’s not that impressive. Earnhardt’s posse receives far too much face time.

The best part of the DVD is Earnhardt dealing with the Make-A-Wish Foundation; the worst is when some of Earnhardt’s male fans present themselves as less than articulate.

Extras include Thanksgiving at the Earnhardts, a tour of his home and a music video. His fans may enjoy it because it’s Dale Jr., but there is little to make it worthwhile for those not already wearing a Budweiser jacket.
