It’s a Busy Day for Mullins

Share

Trainer Jeff Mullins, who could win two Gold Rush Day races at Hollywood Park with Summer Wind Dancer in the $150,000 B. Thoughtful and Beau Soleil in the $150,000 Tiznow, has another live runner in the main event on the Bay Meadows program today.

Captain Squire, who ended an eight-race losing streak with a wire-to-wire win March 19 at Santa Anita, moves back into graded stakes company in the $150,000 San Francisco Breeders’ Cup Mile.

Owned by Bob Bone and Jeff Diener, Captain Squire, a 5-year-old Flying Chevron gelding, will leave from the rail in the Grade II turf race.

A winner once in three starts on the grass, the Florida-bred will be ridden by Chance Rollins in a field that also includes Motel Staff, Gold Ruckus, Sanderman, Ninebanks, Laidlow and Singletary.

Race of the day: Siphonizer, the winner of last year’s Del Mar Futurity who hasn’t run since finishing 10th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on Oct. 25, returns in today’s seventh, a $51,700 allowance at six furlongs, at Churchill Downs.

Pat Day will ride the Siphon colt for owner B. Wayne Hughes and trainer Richard Mandella.

One for the road: Moss Rose, a troubled fourth in her debut March 20 at Santa Anita, shouldn’t miss for owners Bob and Beverly Lewis and trainer Bob Baffert in Churchill Downs’ fourth, a $45,000 maiden race at six furlongs. Cornelio Velasquez will ride.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Summer Wind Dancer in the fourth, Irish Ty, Perfect Mode and Brand Name in the fifth and Green Team and Beau Soleil in the sixth.

Winners (through Thursday): Previous day/meet total: 3/6. Money: Previous day/meet total: $18.60/$40.80. Total money bet: $32.
