Life Lessons Should Be Learned From Tillman

Share

The death of Pat Tillman in Afghanistan puts into perspective previously “newsworthy” issues such as whether Kobe can adjust to the stress of playing with a trial hanging over his head, Maurice Clarett’s struggle to play in the NFL, and whether Barry Bonds took steroids.

Professional athletes should count their blessings and realize that theirs is a position of privilege, and that the real world marches on, regardless of their struggles on and off the field. A sobering intersection of the worlds of sports and global conflict, Mr. Tillman’s death should help us to refocus our attentions appropriately.

In light of Pat Tillman’s death while serving our country, may I please ask for a moratorium on any stories that include whining, highly paid, ungrateful athletes complaining about anything? Also, please stop referring to athletes as “warriors” or games as “battles” or “war.”

Arizona State would do well to rename Sun Devil Stadium as Pat Tillman Memorial Stadium.

As I read about Pat Tillman’s death Friday morning, there is one thought that keeps entering my mind: How can Eli Manning even look at himself in the mirror?
