Derrick Cartwright has been named director of the San Diego Museum of Art. He replaces Don Bacigalupi, who left after four years to become director of the Toledo Museum of Art.
Cartwright has been director of the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College since 2001. Prior to that, he served as the first director of the Musee d’Art Americain in Giverny, France. Cartwright, a specialist in American art and the history of photography, earned his master’s degree in art history from UCLA and a doctorate from the University of Michigan.
Cartwright, 42, will assume his new position at the 78-year-old institution in Balboa Park in September. It will mark a return to San Diego for him. From 1993 to 1998, he directed the Founders Gallery at the University of San Diego, where he also taught art history.
