Officials Say Doctor Was Killed by Her Guard
Mexican prosecutors said a doctor named Mexico’s 1997 woman of the year was abducted, strangled and drowned by a group that included a security guard at her condominium.
The July 22 abduction of Dr. Carmen Gutierrez shocked the nation. Mexico City Public Safety Secretary Marcelo Ebrard said Javier Ortiz, one of three suspects detained, worked as a security guard at Gutierrez’s condo. After holding her for ransom, the gang -- Ortiz, his nephew Noe Iniestra and two other men -- allegedly decided to kill her. Police were searching for the fourth suspect.
“We got nervous,” according to a taped confession by Iniestra shown by police. “We walked her down to the canal ... put a rope around her neck and began strangling her.”
