Ola Kimrin’s last-second 39-yard field goal lifted the Washington Redskins over the Denver Broncos, 20-17, in the Hall of Fame exhibition game Monday at Canton, Ohio.

The Redskins marched efficiently to the winning kick behind third-string quarterback Tim Hasselbeck.

Fourth-string quarterback Mike Quinn led Denver’s 13-play, 58-yard drive that was capped by a two-yard touchdown pass to Jeb Putzier. The Broncos tied the score, 17-17, on a two-point conversion.

San Diego broke off talks with unsigned quarterback Philip Rivers.

Rivers, selected by the New York Giants with the No. 4 pick in the draft, was acquired by the Chargers in the deal that sent quarterback Eli Manning to New York. Manning was selected by San Diego with the No. 1 pick.

A.J. Smith, the Chargers’ general manager, said the team’s proposal wasn’t a slot offer and exceeded the deals for Robert Gallery and Larry Fitzgerald, who were selected with the second and third overall picks.

Gallery signed with Oakland for seven years with $18.5 million guaranteed and $60 million with incentives.

Fitzgerald’s six-year deal with Arizona calls for $20 million guaranteed and $60 million with incentives.

Manning signed with the Giants for $20 million in guaranteed money and can earn $54 million with incentives.

Dallas Cowboy owner Jerry Jones said Quincy Carter was sent a letter about his contract, but wouldn’t say if the team was seeking to recover part of the bonus the quarterback received as the team’s first pick in 2001.

Carter was released Wednesday amid reports that he failed a drug test. The Cowboys have remained vague about why they cut their starting quarterback.

After being selected in the second round in 2001, Carter got a $3.3-million, five-year contract that included a $1.525-million signing bonus.

Jones wouldn’t say if the team was trying to get back $600,000 of that bonus, as ESPN.com reported Monday, citing unnamed sources.
