Suspected Burglar Dies in Police Custody

A man suspected of burglarizing a house in El Monte and biting a resident died from “some sort of medical problem” while in police custody, a sheriff’s deputy said.
Deputy Scott Gage said El Monte police did not use force to detain the suspect after the burglary in the 3400 block of Cogswell Road. The suspect was identified as Hugo Savala, 26, of El Monte.
The condition and identity of the bitten resident were not immediately available.
