Davenport Withdraws

Lindsay Davenport dropped out of the Pilot Pen tennis tournament Monday, citing a wrist injury.

Tournament officials said that Davenport, winner of her last four events, is suffering from tendinitis in her left wrist.

The world’s fourth-ranked player beat Vera Zvonareva in Sunday’s final at the Western and Southern Women’s Open in Mason, Ohio. Davenport won three hard-court events in California earlier this summer, at Palo Alto, Carson and Carlsbad.

“Not being able to return to New Haven is a major disappointment for me,” Davenport said in a written statement. “The pain and risk of further injury have made it impossible for me to play.”

Marissa Irvin, a first-round loser in Ohio last week, replaces Davenport in the draw.

As the top-seeded player, Davenport got a first-round bye, so Irvin automatically advances to the second round.

Unseeded Jelena Kostanic outlasted sixth-seeded Magdalena Maleeva, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the second round.

Also advancing Monday were eighth-seeded Nathalie Dechy of France, American Lisa Raymond and qualifiers Marta Marrero of Spain and Akiko Morigami of Japan.
