Portions of Death Valley Park to Reopen
Limited portions of Death Valley National Park are scheduled to reopen today, more than a week after the entire park was shut down by extensive flood damage.
Work crews continued their cleanup efforts, repairing roads washed out by flash floods that struck the park after an Aug. 15 thunderstorm, killing two motorists.
This morning, officials expect to open the following roads:
* California 178 from Ridgecrest to the park.
* California 190 from U.S. 395 to the junction with Scotty’s Castle Road. Scotty’s Castle Road from California 190 north to Nevada 267 and U.S. 95 at Scotty’s Junction.
* The Wildrose-Emigrant Canyon Road connecting California 178 and 190.
The Furnace Creek visitor facilities remain closed but Scotty’s Castle and Stovepipe Wells Village will open, along with the following campgrounds: Emigrant, Wildrose, Thorndike, Mahogany Flat and Mesquite Springs.
Park entrance fees will not be charged, but camping fees and tour charges at Scotty’s Castle will be collected.
